Mt Kilimanjaro: Machame out Mweka / Tusker Route
Description
The Machame Route is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and visually rewarding ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek begins on the mountain’s southwestern side at Machame Gate and descends via Mweka on the southeastern slope, giving climbers a diverse and ever-changing landscape throughout the journey. Along the way, hikers pass through remarkable locations such as the Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley, and Lava Tower.
Often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is considered more challenging than the Marangu Route because trekkers camp in tents rather than staying in mountain huts. It is currently the second most popular route on the mountain.
Climbers spend their nights in mountain tents, typically accommodating two people per three-person tent to allow extra room for luggage. Porters carry all camping gear and supplies, while meals are freshly prepared during the expedition.
Machame is best suited for adventurous hikers seeking a more demanding climb and who are comfortable trekking for extended periods over moderately steep terrain. Although the route can be completed in a minimum of six days, a seven-day itinerary is highly recommended to improve summit success rates. The descent follows the Mweka trail on the southeastern side of the mountain.
